I just read the book The Magicians by Lev Grossman and it is definately one of the top ten books I have ever read. The author is an alumni of Lexington High School in Lexingon, MA.
This book is basically a fantasy book for fans of fantasy. The main character is a genius in his high school, and when it comes time to apply to colleges, he finds himself, after taking a magical SAT, accepted to a Hogwarts-like institution of magic.
When the main character was younger, he used to read these Narnia-like books (Fillory=Narnia), and the only thing he wanted when he was younger was to join the people in the books. Be careful what you wish for.
What I really thought was excellent about this book is the way Grossman makes magic so real. A lot of the issues in fantasy is that it seems just too fantastic, and doesn't really seem like it could happen. This books draws you in, and makes you feel like a part of its world. Like Lucy through the Wardrobe.
